Irritation vs Infection
One of the biggest misconceptions in piercing aftercare is assuming every bump, flare-up, or bit of redness means infection.
Irritation is quicker to heal once you identify the cause and if caught before infection will not extend the healing time of your new piercing.
Things like jewellery quality, sleeping pressure, excessive cleaning, or constant touching can all trigger irritation and slow healing down. Understanding the difference is important because irritation is often related to jewellery quality, pressure, or aftercare habits.
Common irritation symptoms include:
- redness,
- swelling,
- tenderness,
- piercing bumps,
- and mild discharge.
Nickel Sensitivity
Some irritation is actually an allergic reaction to nickel-containing jewellery.
When getting a new piercing we would recommend using only implant grade titanium, this removes the possibility of potential allergies and allows the piercing to heal properly.

Incorrect Jewellery Sizing
Jewellery that is too short can place pressure on healing tissue trapping moisture and bacteria in the new piercing leading to infection.
Jewellery that is too large can increase movement and trauma, it is always recommend that a few mm of movement on each side of the piercing site is best to allow for potential swelling (around 8mm)
Proper sizing is essential for:
- swelling management,
- healing stability,
- and comfort.
Thread type matters
For new piercings internally threaded jewellery is the standard, as the thread is hidden inside the bar removing the possibility of trauma to the site when inserting and removing the jewellery.
Sleeping Pressure
Cartilage piercings are especially vulnerable to irritation from sleeping pressure.
Consistent pressure can cause:
- bumps,
- delayed healing,
- migration,
- and soreness.
Overcleaning
Many people over-clean their piercings using harsh products.
Avoid:
- alcohol,
- hydrogen peroxide,
- tea tree oil,
- and excessive antiseptics.
We would only suggest using a reputable sterile saline solutions to clean.
Touching and Rotation
Rotating or twisting jewellery is outdated advice.
Excessive touching introduces:
- bacteria,
- friction,
- and unnecessary trauma.
In summery piercing irritation can be improved by:
- wearing high-quality jewellery,
- minimizing pressure,
- using gentle aftercare,
- and avoiding unnecessary movement.
